38 - PALAZZO NATALUCCI  (Natalucci Palace)

Property of the most noble Trevi family, it was restored in the XVIII century by the illustrious Durastante, author of the monumental “Historia di Trevi”, recently published by the Pro Trevi. Until 1550 it was the Jewish quarter, and this probably accounts for its peculiar architecture. In the past usury could not be practiced by Christians people, therefore a community in need of a loan must necessarily apply to the Jews and invite them to their city. They had the same rights of the inhabitants of Trevi, but they had also to submit to certain conditions: they were obliged to finance some bank-holydays; they could not leave their houses from the Holy Thursday to the Easter Sunday; they could not practice an interest rate higher than 50% and they could not practice the “uxura de uxuris” (compound interest). In 1556 they were obliged to leave Trevi by an ordinance of Pio V; they moved to Ancona.
